Mike Childs

The Hellegat series A to C focuses on the architectural forms of the Hells Gate viaduct passing by my South Bronx studio. Repeating arches, 19th century support structures and red oxide colors found on the 3 mile structure have been the inspiration for this ongoing series. The word Hellegat was given to this local section of the east river by the colonizing Dutch which the viaduct spans. The word can translate to “bright passage”, but was Chamorro Hells Gate by the English.
