In Nicolas V. Sanchez: Charcoal, Sanchez continues to explore his Mexican-American family history and legacy. Ballet folklorico dancers in sweeping lace skirts and ornate accessories of the traditional dress glow with a pearlescent inner light. Scenes of domesticity and family life in a Mexican landscape pause with immediacy and seeming ephemerality in the grayscale medium. Previously rendered in prismatic watercolor and oil, as in his seminal Folklorico de Guerrero (2020) honoring his seamstress mother, Sanchez's subjects cast a striking beauty in these spectral charcoals.
